Book Assignments

Trails Books is looking for writers to accept assignments for quality regional books about travel, outdoor activities, sports, gardening, food, nature, ghost stories, the supernatural, history, photography, and children's books.

While previous book writing experience is helpful, what’s most important is that you possess strong writing skills, know how to meet deadlines, and have a background and interest in topics that will excite our readers.

To be considered for book assignments, send a resume, three non-returnable writing samples, and a list of topics you’d like to write about, to:

Book Submission Guidelines

While we assign many of our books to authors, we do consider unsolicited concepts and manuscripts for publication. Such proposals are judged on how closely they meet our marketing objective of publishing quality books that expand our share of the regional nonfiction market in the upper Midwest. Our titles focus on the upper Midwest generally and the specific states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. Our topics include travel, outdoor activities, sports and sports biography, gardening, food, nature, ghost stories, the supernatural, history, photography, and children's books

If you wish to submit a proposal or manuscript, please follow these guidelines carefully.

Trails Books is a regional nonfiction publisher. We only consider books with a strong intrinsic focus on the region we serve.

We do not publish fiction, poetry, essays or personal memoirs.

Review the Trails Books catalog (www.trailsbooks.com) to determine whether your book is a good fit with what we publish.

Take time to develop a clear idea of who will buy your book and why. What will give your book a competitive edge over others in its category?

It is best to submit a one-page summary of your idea, an outline, and no more than three sample chapters for consideration, to the Managing Editor at the above address. If your book relies on photography or illustrations, submit appropriate samples. If we wish to see more, we will contact you to request additional material.

Unless you specifically request in writing that your materials be returned, and provide a self-addressed envelope with sufficient return postage, unaccepted proposals will be destroyed after consideration. In any event, we cannot be responsible for the return of unsolicited manuscripts, photographs or artwork. If you have material that is difficult or expensive to replace, query us about the book concept first before sending it.

Our publication schedule is set a minimum of two years in advance; therefore, our decision making process can take considerable time. Please allow at least six months for our response to your unsolicited proposal. We typically reject proposals more quickly, so the longer it takes to hear from us, the more likely that your proposal is under active consideration.
